“The Kids are All Right” gets five Film Independent Spirit Award nominations including best picture
The 2011 Film Independent Spirit Award nominations were announced this morning and the drama The Kids Are All Right earned five nods including best feature, best director (Lisa Cholodenko), best actress (Annette Bening) and best supporting actor (Mark Ruffalo).
Kids stars Bening and Julianne Moore (both four-time Academy Award nominees) as a longtime couple raising two children. Their lives are turned upside down when their daughter, about to leave for college, tracks down her sperm donor father (Ruffalo).
Also earning a Spirit nod for screenwriting were Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg.
It’s somewhat of a surprise that Moore did not get a nomination but that is likely due to exceptionally string competition in the lead actress category. In addition to Bening, those nominated were: Greta Gerwig for Greenberg, Nicole Kidman for Rabbit Hole, Jennifer Lawrence for Winter’s Bone, Natalie Portman for Black Swan and Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine.
