The great Katherine Helmond of “Who’s the Boss” and “Soap” fame has died at age 89

She may be best known for her hilarious role of Mona on Who’s the Boss but to me, Katherine Helmond will always be the deliciously funny Jessica Tate on Soap.

Jessica was put on trial for murdering her tennis coach/lover and the episodes in court are among the funniest I’d ever seen on television up until that time. In this pre-VCR era, I used my tape recorder to make audio recordings of some of the episodes and my hysterical laughter can be heard in the recordings.

Good times.

God speed to this gifted actress.

Here is EW.com’s story on her passing with tributes from her former co-stars.

What a huge loss. She was an extraordinary actress, and I’m sad to hear that she suffered from Alzheimer’s in her later years. She always had such a fierce intelligence and quick wit, and like you, while I loved her in “Who’s The Boss”, she will always be Mrs. Tate in my memories.

  2. So sad to hear this news! I think that tonight I will be going home to my “Soap” DVD box set to binge some “Soap” in her honor. It was always one of my favorite TV shows, and I loved her on “Who’s the Boss”, as well. Rest in Peace, Katherine Helmond.

  3. Now that I’m a healthy 82 and aiming for 97, this seem too young to me. Ridiculous, I now. But realistically I know it’s a pretty good long run.
