The 2012 Greggys: The Daytime Soap Star of the Year is Chandler Massey – again!

Wow, what a year for Days of Our Lives star Chandler Massey.

First he wins an Emmy and now he has won a Greggy for the second time!

I wonder which one he covets most?

It’s no secret that I think the world of Chandler because he is such a nice and thoughtful young man with impeccable manners. I spent time on the Days of Our Lives set this past year and interviewed him on several other occasions.

But even if I had never met him, this Greggy Award for Daytime Soap Star of the Year would be his again because he is, quite simply, one of the best actors on any soap right now.

He has taken us on such a journey as Will Horton over the past 12 months. We’ve seen Will come to terms with being gay, kiss another guy for the first time, enter into a flirtatious cat-and-mouse game with his former stepfather/employer, get arrested for murder, come out to his parents, take his friendship with Sonny to the next step: romance, have an ill-advised one-night stand with ex-girlfriend Gabi that left her pregnant, and now moving forward with his relationship with Sonny while keeping the secret of the baby paternity from him.

In the hands of a less actor, this kind of drama might have seemed ridiculous at times. But Chandler made us believe in much of it (I didn’t ever buy him blackmailing EJ but I did enjoy it!) and he made us care. He has given Will a real core and no matter what the writers throw at him, he retains that core of who Will is and has fleshed out a multi-dimensional character day in and day out.

Daytime soaps have dwindled in numbers but Days has managed to stay on the air and for it to have its first LGBT characters in Will and Sonny (Freddie Smith) is the reason I watch – in addition to any opportunities to see Eric Martsolf (Brady) shirtless!

Will has been at the center of the action and I hope he remains so – with or without Sonny – because he’s such an interesting character played by such a gifted actor.

  1. You are so right Greg, what a gifted actor, what a terrific day drama! This program is addictive. Once you see all of the different storylines, you have to keep coming back to get your fix. Sonny and Will’s relationship is the highlight – Two outstanding actors supported by a wonderful cast. I will say this is one “daily” program that is at the top of my watch list!

  2. I would have made it a tie between the two — Chandler and Freddie. They are both doing a great job of it — you feel that they are really having fun with the kissing scenes. Credit is also due to the writers for having both characters as part of the show’s core families – they are related in some way to all of the great couples and characters of the past, rather than being fairly extraneous and therefore excisable. Hopefully they’ll continue to be integral to the show. And next year Sonny had better get an ornament on the Horton xmas tree!

  3. Agreed. He is a wonderful, beautiful actor.

  4. Look forward to seeing more of Chandler Massey. I hope he gets another daytime Emmy. So talented.
