The 2012 Greggys: Newlyweds of the Year are Thomas Roberts and Patrick Abner!

Good Morning America’s Sam Champion married Rubem Robierb in NYC just last Friday but the Greggy Award for Newlyweds of the Year goes to MSNBC anchor Thomas Roberts and his hubby Patrick Abner.

Their October wedding took place on the rooftop of Manhattan’s Gansevoort Hotel on Park Ave.  in a ceremony  performed by Gavin Newsom, the Lieutenant Governor of California.

Newsom is the former San Francisco mayor who in 2004 authorized same-sex marriages in that city which were later annulled.

Performing at the ceremony was country music singer Chely Wright who had married LGBT rights advocate Lauren Blitzer in August. Champion and Robierb were among the guests at the wedding along with Tony Award winning actress Judith Light, CNN anchor Don Lemon, television personalities Nate Berkus and Carson Kressley, author Christopher Rice, civil rights activist and best-selling author David Mixner, blogger Meghan McCain and MSNBC anchors Tamron Hall and Chris Jansing.

About a week after the wedding, Roberts and Abner were profiled in in The New York Times.  In the article, the couple reflected on the many bumps in the road throughout the years including many career-related geographical challenges that had them living apart at times as well as Roberts being fired from the syndicated entertainment show The Insider and bringing to justice the parish priest who had molested Roberts when he was a kid in Baltimore.

‘It hasn’t always been easy,’ Abner said.

But he was smitten from the start.

“Every time I turned around he was doing something thoughtful,’ he said of Thomas. ‘I knew this was the person who was going to be there no matter what. Security is a big thing for me. It’s one of my issues, but Thomas provided that on top of the attraction that we had for each other.’

Thomas said the wedding was all he ever hoped for – and more.

‘We’re so lucky that we get to do this,’ he said. ‘It blows my mind. … All of my favorite people, all of the greatest influences in my life, family and friends, in one room. It’s incredible.’

UPDATE: Thomas will be in Miami on New Year’s Eve to officiate a second ceremony for Champion and Robierb whose engagement was announced in the NYT story about Thomas and Patrick. Writes Thomas on Facebook: Yep, it is true… I am ordained! Thanks “Universal Life Church” ~ What an exciting way to close out an incredible year!!
