The 2012 Greggys: Music Star of the Year is R&B/Hip-Hop sensation Frank Ocean!

Just 10 days before the release of his very first solo album last summer, R&B and Hip Hop star Frank Ocean came out as a gay man.

It was far from a career killer.

The 25-year-old Ocean is now a six-time Grammy nominee, the album Change Orange is a big hit, and he has vowed with memorable performances this year at the MTV Video Music Awards and Saturday Night Live.

Ocean, previously famous for being a member of Odd Future, published a screenshot on July 4 of a text document on his tumblr that revealed his sexuality.

The document, titled ‘Thank You’, was written on a plane between New Orleans and Los Angeles, and was originally meant to be in the album notes for Channel Orange.
Ocean wrote: ‘4 summers ago, I met somebody. I was 19 years old. He was too. We spent that summer, and the summer after, together. Everyday almost, and on the days we were together, time would glide.

‘Most of the time I’d see him, and his smile. I’d hear his conversation and his silence…until it was time to sleep. Sleep I would often share with him. By the time I realized I was in love, it was malignant. It was hopeless.’

Ocean says when he looked back on his previous girlfriends and the love songs he used to play for them, the lyrics were ‘written in a language’ he did not yet speak.

At the end of the beautiful letter, he gives his thanks to the man he fell in love with, as well as all the other people who knew his story.

He says: ‘I don’t know what happens now, and that’s alrite. I don’t have any secrets I need kept anymore.’

Frank came out as a gay man over the summer and it is such a beautiful thing to see him thriving.

Below is his gorgeous performance from the VMAs where he did a serenely acoustic version of the song Thinkin Bout You from Channel Orange.
