Tennis hottie Dominic Thiem calls it a career
One of my most favorite tennis players of all time, Dominic Thiem, played his last match on the ATP Tour earlier today. The 2020 US Open champion and former world number three is retiring at the age of 31.
Such a classy, handsome guy, Thiem had one of the most beautiful backhands in the game – and the biggest, most-admired booty.
“He’s got a nice, strong, big ‘tuchus’!” commentator Justin Gimelstob said in 2017. “The butt is a huge source of power, and he’s so strong in his base. He’s so strong, and it’s a huge origin of his power.”
Thiem had to play his career in the shadows of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal but had wins over all of them. He was twice runner-up to Nadal at the French Open and once to Djokovic at the Australian Open. After finally getting grand slam glory at the US Open, Thiem suffered a serious wrist injury and was never the same, powerful and confident player he once was.
After trying to climb back up the rankings for a few years, Thiem announced earlier this year that this season would be his last.
He was a hugely popular player who, I hope, will find ways to remain in the public eye that make him happy.
“I hope that I am still remembered as a tennis player (with) a nice game style people love to watch,” he said this week. “In the future, I would really love to hear that many kids started playing tennis or that people started doing sports because of me,” he says. “Jumping really ahead in time, it would be amazing if I’m connected with doing or helping to make the planet just a better place.”
