TBT: 19 years ago today, Elizabeth Taylor and Julie Andrews became Dames of the British Empire

View this post on Instagram

19 years ago today, Queen Elizabeth II recognized Elizabeth Taylor's contributions to acting and AIDS activism by appointing her a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire. ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Here, she is seen alongside Julie Andrews, who was also honored that day. (Elizabeth broke palace protocol to wear her medal for the photo!) ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ Elizabeth later said about that exciting day, “There is a nice little behind-the-scenes footnote to this day, which is that my old friend Julie Andrews was also among those being recognized by the Queen. Julie and I were glued at the hip out of pure nervousness and excitement. Julie is a lady and I’m not – I’m more of a broad, so I guess becoming a dame seems like a natural extension. As I recall, at one point while we were being briefed before the ceremony, our patient instructor turned to Julie and advised her ‘to look after me.’ As though I would possibly misbehave! But Julie has a grand sense of humor, and I was so grateful to share that special day with her.”⁣ ⁣ #ElizabethTaylor #OnThisDay⁣ #otd
