Taye Diggs flops as “Hedwig” – show to close

Taye Diggs as Hedwig is not a hit.

Producers of the Tony winning Broadway musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch have announced that the show will close next month due to slumping ticket sales.

Diggs had followed Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall, John Cameron Mitchell and Darren Criss in the role of a transgender East German punk rocker who is the victim of a botched sex change operation.

The reviewers were not kind to Diggs with Elisabeth Vincentelli of the New York Post writing this week that he is ‘completely miscast’ in the role.

‘It has nothing to do with him being black and everything to do with him looking pretty damn uncomfortable in the role,’ Vincentelli wrote. ‘Diggs never connects with Hedwig. … You never forget Diggs is performing, from his awkward strut in platform shoes to the pseudo-antagonistic audience interactions. How can spitting water onto the first row look so forced?’

The show will close on 13 September after 506 performances at the Belasco Theatre in New York City.

Diggs stepped into the character’s blond wig, fishnets and platform shoes on 22 July when he replaced Criss in the role.

‘Hedwig is the role of a lifetime,’ Diggs said at the time.

It marked Diggs’ first New York stage role since the 2005 revival of A Soldier’s Play. He made his Broadway debut in 1994 in the Tony Award-winning revival of Carousel.

His best-known Broadway role is that of Benny in the musical Rent, a role he recreated in the 2005 film version.

2 Remarks

  1. I love me some Taye D. he literally is like a walking fantasy but the role of Hedwig, if the producers were going out to throw a bit of caution-in-the-wind per say, I would have went to the incredible Wilson Cruz. I know they were trying to show Broadway with a bit of diversity, which is always good because think of the incredible Audra McDonald, who can do it all and has been the “Bell of The Broadway Ball”, every time she steps into a role. I know where they were going but Taye is beautiful and talented like no other but in my opinion Wilson would have given a bit more of the flamboyance that this character needed. A bigger stretch would have been the incredible Daryl Stephens from Logo’s defunct ‘Noah’s Arc’ and from ‘Boy Culture’, which most must know that Daryl is literally the perfect blend of so many things that are masculine, feminine and just downright human. I pray Taye doesn’t take this personally because ‘The Great White Way’ always has seasons and possibly the summer season isn’t for him but maybe when the weather is a bit chilly, there could be a vehicle that he is going to shine in.

  2. Tay Diggs is a fine actor and an amazing Broadway stage performer along with a marquee name. Yet a definite mis-cast by the producers of this revolving door star hit show. With the height of summer tourism for Broadway still the plummeting ticket sales says it all.
