“Tangerine” star Mya Taylor becomes first transgender actress to win at the Independent Spirit Awards

Mya Taylor made history Saturday when she became the first transgender actress to win an Independent Spirit Award.

This is stupendous!

Taylor won in the best supporting actress category for her performance the film Tangerine and prevailed over a field that included Cynthia Nixon (James White), Jennifer Jason Leigh (Anomalisa), Marin Ireland (Glass Chin) and Robin Bartlett (H.).

‘First of all, no one tells you how nervous you’re gonna be when you’re up against other big actors for an award. There are so many things that go through your head, like “Am I gonna trip on this long-ass dress getting up here?”‘ she joked at the podium upon accepting her award during the ceremony which took place in a tent on the beach in Santa Monica.

‘I have had a long journey through my 2015 because I had come from almost nothing and then got this role and this movie, and my life just did a total 360.’

The film follows Hollywood trans sex worker Sin-Dee Rella (Kitana Kiki Rodriquez), who, upon discovering her pimp boyfriend is cheating on her, goes on the warpath with best friend Alexandra (Taylor) in tow.

Rodriguez, who is also transgender, was nominated in the best actress category but lost out to Oscar front-runner Brie Larson who won for Room.

Previous to starring in Tangerine, neither woman had major acting experience.

Taylor ended her speech with a message to filmmakers: ‘There is transgender talent. There’s very beautiful transgender talent. So, you better get it out there and put it in your next movie.’

Last month at a special screening of Tangerine hosted by Caitlyn Jenner, Taylor said she had to do sex work on and off to get by before she landed her first movie role.

She said she applied for 186 jobs in one month and I did 26 interview back-to-back and did not get a single offer.

‘I wanted to be able to live a normal life just like everybody else and I tried so hard and thought, “God, what am I doing wrong?”’ she said at the screening. ‘But I guess God didn’t have that in the cards for me. He had this (movie).’
