“Surviving Sam” star Chris Meloni talks about his ass, LGBT equality, Michael Sam and more
Okay, full disclosure: Chris Meloni is one of my all-time favorite TV hunks – all time.
I suspect that for young gay kids he causes that same funny feeling I had as a kid when I saw Kent McCord on Adam 12 and Michael Douglas on The Streets of San Francisco.
Loved Meloni on Oz, obviously, and on Law & Order: SVU and will check out his new sitcom Surviving Jack over the weekend.
Does his popularity among gays surprise him?
‘With the ass that I’m sporting? No,’ the actor tells The Advocate before bursting into laughter.
He’s joking but he’s probably not far off the mark!
Chris is a longtime straight ally to the LGBTI community.
He says he was particularly impressed by college football star Michael Sam who came out as gay before the NFL draft.
‘My son plays football, and I remember when Michael Sam came out. I told him, “That’s a real man. That’s a guy with courage.” Right before he’s about to take the next step toward furthering his career, he said “I’m gay. Let’s move on.”‘
‘I think that’s the kind of example, the type of behavior, that’s going to push us forward,’ Meloni says. ‘For more people to say, “I don’t want to carry this silly burden anymore, this silly secret, let’s move on. It’s not the focal point of who I am.”‘
‘That said,’ he adds, ‘I’m not gay and I don’t deal with it on a daily basis, but that’s how it strikes me and I think we’re already way far into it.’
