Sunday Showtunes: All about Dick Van Dyke! at the Hollywood Bowl this weekend – I was there on Friday night – delighted in seeing the ageless Dick Van Dyke – singing and dancing and even rapping!

The man is 85 years old and moves like someone about four decades younger. What an enduring talent.

While he is best known for the classic sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show and the long-running Diagnosis Murder, Van Dyke is a gifted song and dance man who won the Tony Award for Bye Bye Birdie and returned to Broadway more than 20 years later to star in The Music Man. He starred in the film version of Birdie as well as the movie musicals Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Here are some musical numbers from this great star – including a wonderful duet with Mary Tyler Moore!

3 Remarks

  1. OOPS!! Robert Preston went on to star in the film version of “The Music Man”. I think you meant to say that Dick Van Dyke went on to star in the film version of “Bye Bye Birdie” but it reads the other way.

  2. Actually, Greg has it right. As it says in Dick’s memoir, “My Lucky Life In and Out of Show Business,” Dick appeared in a stage revival of “The Music Man” that went to Broadway in 1980. Reviews were mixed, with most critics saying that Dick was too nice a performer and not enough of a scoundrel.

  3. Stuart and Ed: I updated the post. The way it was originally worded, it made it seem like he had done The Music Man film which, of course, he did not. Thanks guys!
