3 Remarks

  1. Regarding Cate Blanchett. I believe roles should go to the best actor, the one that fits the role the best and gives the best performance. If we are going to live in a world where LGBT roles can only be played by LGBT actors, then that means gay actors can’t be cast in straight roles, transgendered actors can’t be cast in non-transgendered roles, etc. That’s not the way it should be. I fully agree with Cate. Actors should be allowed to explore different worlds, different perspectives, different lives. That’s why it’s called acting.

Make no mistake. I am 100% for much more inclusivity, and I would love to see more major roles featuring women, POC, and LGBT. But when we say ONLY a gay man can play the role of a gay man, or ONLY a transgendered woman can play the role of a transgendered woman, then we are also reinforcing the idea that a gay man can’t play a straight character on a sitcom or a lesbian can’t play a straight woman in a movie.

  2. The bod on Chris Cuomo, lovely sight to see, lovely in deed.

  3. I’m tired of our community knocking any straight actor for playing an LGBT role. Yes, it’s nice when we see those roles go to members of our community. It’s just the same when those in our community play straight roles. I’d rather filmmakers focus on making the best casting choices for quality of acting, not just because someone is a member of this community, that ethnicity, or that gender. Just make the damn films.

Cate is a powerfully good actress. I’d much rather see her cast in something than someone just beginning without the chops to play whatever role. There are roles she isn’t good for. You get the idea. This is another article on the Logo site that is just trying to stoke the fires of discontent. She said nothing controversial.

Look at Laverne Cox. She’s getting a number of roles. She’s capable but I wouldn’t call her a great actor. But she’s powerful because she’s working and trying to improve. Do I think she should get a role over an established and laureled actor? No, she should continue to hone her craft and build up the resume it takes. It shouldn’t just be cast because she’s trans, black, or anything other than ability.
