Showtune Sunday: See Patti LuPone’s out of this world “The Ladies Who Lunch” from “Company”
Oh, this is good – damned good.
Somehow, I have never seen the 2011 staged concert production of Company that starred Neil Patrick Harris, Stephen Colbert, Jon Cryer, Christina Hendricks, and Anika Noni Rose, among others.
Oh yeah, it also starred my queen, Patti LuPone!
So here it is, Miss LuPone performing The Ladies Who Lunch.
OMG. When she launches into the lyric ‘Aren’t they a geeeeeeeeeeeem? Let’s drink to theeeeeeeeeeeem!’ I got goose bumps.
Love it!

As much as I love Patti LuPone (and I know how much you do, Greg) I was actually disappointed by this version of “Ladies Who Lunch”. I didn’t like the Samba beat and don’t feel she conveyed the biting, bitter cynicism the part requires. Don’t get me wrong — this entire production was great (Stephen Colbert can sing? Who knew?) and Ms. LuPone certainly sang the hell out of the song but it was done better by Barbara Walsh in the 2006 revival with Raul Esparza. And, of course, there’s no comparison to the Elaine Stritch original (although her recent versions are sorely lacking). Go ahead, slam me, LOL.
Gaspar Marino says:
The song will always belong to Elaine Stritch, but here we have show stopping Patti in her finest form. She not only sings magnificently her acting and phrasing make the song on the level of an operetic aria. The taping seems to be on the night I saw it in NY where she stopped the show cold, as you can see!
