Showtune Sunday: Highlights from 1980s’ “The Beatrice Arthur Special” with guest Rock Hudson!

So last night I attended a terrific one-man show called Blink & You Might Miss Me starring Larry Blum. Will write more about it later.

One of the clips Larry showed was when he was a dancer on the 1980 Beatrice Arthur special which the great star made after the end of Maude and before the start of The Golden Girls.

Never heard of it? Well, could be because it finished second-to-last-place in the ratings that week!

But thank God for YouTube!

Here are some of the musical numbers from the special which gave Miss Arthur the chance to show television audiences that before she was Maude, she was a great stage star (Mame, Fiddler on the Roof, Threepenny Opera).

Here she is with guests Rock Hudson, Melba Moore and – wait for it – Wayland Flowers and Madame.

One Remark

  1. Today network executives would give there front teeth for the bottom of the ratings 1980 numbers. Nowadays, that would be considered a top 5 show.
5 years later Rock would be dead at 59 and Waylon, in 1988 at 48.
