Showtune Sunday: Glenn Close, Patti LuPone and Betty Buckley lead a Norma Desmond sing-off
It seems like the perfect time for a Norma Desmond sing-off. Glenn Close is returning to Broadway as Norma Desmond in a revival of Sunset Boulevard. It’s a role that won her a Tony Award in the mid-1990s. But she’s not the only Broadway legend to play Norma. Patti LuPone originated the role in London and was contracted to take it to Broadway a year later. But Close got the Broadway gig instead and LuPone sued. I have the soundtrack of LuPone’s Sunset and she’s dynamite. It’s a pity she never got to play it on Broadway. Betty Buckley is a big winner in all this as she replaced LuPone as Norma in London and later also played the role on Broadway. Others to play Broadway or London include Elaine Page and Petula Clark. I’ve also included Diahann Carroll in this post as she played the role in the Toronto production.
