Showtune Sunday: Dubbing Through the Decades in Musicals – even Angela Lansbury was once dubbed!

Rosalind Russell in Gypsy and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady are two of the most famous examples of movie stars with limited singing abilities being cast as the lead in major Hollywood musicals and having their singing dubbed.

I had not realized how common this was until watching this video compilation – even very capable singers like Angela Lansbury, a Broadway musical legend, have been dubbed!

Below is Rosalind Russell singing Everything’s Coming Up Roses in her own voice.

2 Remarks

  1. Great compilation ! Being an avid Musical film buff, I knew of just about all the dubbers/dubees in the clip,
but it was fun to see so many of them together at one sitting. There’s an amazing internet site to go to, for a list of over 500 or more musical voice dubbers !!! Happy hunting.

  2. Wait…What?! Hollywood is Fake!? I’m Crushed!
