Showtune Sunday: Cher’s movie music!

We think of Cher first as a singer but, of course, she’s also an Oscar winning actress.

The Oscar was for Moonstruck and her other most acclaimed movie roles came in Silkwood, Mask, Suspect and Come Back to the Five and Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean.

But Cher has never starred in a full-fledged musical on the big screen which is a real shame. There was talk of her doing a TV version of Mame so maybe that will happen but not likely.

Still, Cher has had some music in her movies and I’m highlighting it here. In one of her earliest films, 1969′s Chastity, the song Chastity’s Song (Band of Thieves) is part of the soundtrack.

Then there is the wonderful Shoop Shoop Song on the Mermaids soundtrack which gave Cher a #1 hit in the UK and a lovely little bit of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes from her 1999 film Tea With Mussolini.

The closest Cher has gotten to a real big screen musical was 2010′s Burlesque in which she has two memorable numbers: Welcome to Burlesque and the powerful balled You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me written by Diane Warren.

I’ve featured those songs below – enjoy!
