Showtune Sunday: “As If We Never Said Goodbye” from Streisand, LuPone, Buckley and … Colfer!

I haven’t done this in a couple of years and I’ve certainly never included Chris Colfer in the mix!

It’s time to compare various versions of As If We Never Said Goodbye from Sunset Boulevard.

I’ve included Colfer with divas Barbra Streisand, Patti LuPone, Betty Buckley, Glenn Close and Elaine Paige.

Whose version do you think is the best?

My two cents: Buckley is a stunner! I don’t think I’d watched her perform this song before and, as usual, she knocks it out of the park! LuPone is my second choice while Close is surprisingly subpar. I saw her in the Los Angeles production and remember it being better than she sounds here at the Tony Awards.

Would love your thoughts!

7 Remarks

  1. Got to say I was there the night Barbra sang that song. Her first live concert in some years the hair in the back of my neck stood up on this and every song she sang that evening.
Barbra also looked gorgeous and at her very best…gets my vote!

lupone gets it just right. colfer makes it new again, buckley was a disappointment, page was too theatrical and barbra sounds pretty, but to me, completely misses the point.

  3. i would add one more for consideration – Petula Clark. i was in London and although i had seen it a couple of other times here in the U.S., i said, “What the heck. You like Petula Clark.”

amazingly, i was transfixed! i had never thought of her as a stage performer. what an eye-opening. she was marvelous!

Colfer? wow had no idea. Something for me to check out. When I saw Sunset Blvd on SF stage it was Petula Clark — had my ‘heart’ set on Glen Close but Petula Clark was good.

  5. Of course all four performances are VERY good. Chris Colfer’s clear voice is sublime…just beautiful. Elaine’s stage performance is best. LuPone’s powerful voice is amazing. And Barbara is Barbara…one of the most beautiful voices ever. Thanks so much for this musical experience!

I played Betty and Patti AT THE SAM TIME, lined up the vocals, and WOW! Thanks Greg :)

  7. Buckley is still amazing!
