Showtune Sunday: All about the big ballad ‘Before the Parade Passes By’ from ‘Hello, Dolly!’
Before it became on of the longest-running musicals in Broadway history, Hello, Dolly! had rocky out-of-town tryouts in Detroit and Washington, D.C. After receiving the reviews, the creators made major changes to the script and score, including the addition of the song Before the Parade Passes By.
The song comes at the end of Act 1 when Dolly decides to put her dear departed husband Ephram behind her and to move on with life “Before the Parade Passes By”. She asks Ephram’s permission to marry Horace.
Below are versions of the big number by some of the most famous Dollys including Carol Channing, Ethel Merman, Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler, among others.
