Showtune Sunday: All About Maureen McGovern!

Yesterday was Maureen McGovern’s 64th birthday and this seems like as good a time as any to celebrate this magnificent talent and showbiz survivor.

She, of course, came on to the scene in a big way with her #1 hit single The Morning After from the movie Poseidon Adventure It was Oscar-nominated and she was nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist.

After some lean years, Miss McGovern re-invented herself as a stage actress appearing on Broadway in The Pirates of Penzance and Little Women as well as on off-Broadway and in regional productions.

Here are three performances from throughout the years:

Although I understand featuring her number one hit and her stage work – after all, the title of your piece is “showtune Sunday”, LOL – “Different Worlds” will always be my favorite McGovern song. As the theme song for “Angie”, a sitcom I loved when I was young, it was great. But even apart from the show, every time I hear that song, it’s so inherently cheerful it lifts my spirits. Maureen McGovern, count me as one of your millions of fans!

  2. Fascinating Rythim reminds me of listening to Dame Cleo Laine.

  3. I also loved and still love “Different Worlds”
