Showtune Sunday: All About Lena Horne!

The great Lena Horne, who died in 2010 at the age of 92, left behind so many wonderful performances and I’ve chosen three of them for Showtune Sunday.

My absolute favorite is Believe in Yourself from The Wiz. I remember being blown away when seeing her belt it out when watching the film in a theater way back when.

But then, Miss Horne had been playing audiences away for decades by the time of that 1978 film.

Here as well are her performing Stormy Weather and Moon River.

Such a splendidly talented woman. She was an active member of the civil rights movement and always spoke out against the injustices facing her people. If you want to understand a bit of what she was going through, look for the interview she did with Ed Bradley on 60 Minutes. Brilliant.

  2. One night I was sitting in the front row of one of performances. She sang a set of songs, then stopped in the middle of a song. She walked to the edge of the stage and addressed to women who I had heard talking during the performance. She asked them whether they had come to hear her sing or talk about her appearance and weight among other things. She then asked them to either be quiet or to leave. Not another word out of them and they left a half time. Was she professional to have done so? I believe so if it was obviously bothering her and possibly affecting the quality of her performance. It was an evening, I’ve never forgotten…a superb performance by a remarkable lady!
