Showtune Sunday: All about Doris Day – 89 today!

We don’t see Doris Day in public anymore but I hope she’s having a happy life in Carmel where she has lived for many years.
Miss Day, who turned 89 today, was a huge movie star (Calamity Jane, Pillow Talk, The Pajama Game, The Man Who Knew Too Much, Lullaby of Broadway), a huge TV star (The Doris Say Show) and a huge recording star (Secret Love, Que Sera, Sera).
She all but retired from showbiz in the mid-70s but did re-emerge in the 80s to host the show Doris Day and Friends and in 1989 was presented with the Cecil B. Demille Award at the Golden Globe Awards. Miss Day also received a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2004 and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement in 2006. No doubt she would receive an honorary Academy Award for her film career if she would agree to attend the ceremony which is not likely.

I’m just an ordinary 50 yr old woman who grew up loving Doris because my mom loved her so. In fact you remind me of my mom who just passed away this summer of Alzheimers at 72 yrs old. One thing that brought her mind back for a moment was music….your music. Singing your songs or playing them would put a smile on her face and she would try to sing along or keep to the beat. Priceless, priceless moments! I’ve passed this love and admiration for your music and movies to my daughters who are now passing it on to their daughters who are giving your movies to their little girls for Christmas. Thank you Doris for sharing your talent and love. Your movies and music will continue through the ages and always fill us with love, happiness and joy. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
