Serena Williams on course to reclaim #1 ranking

Serena Williams, who has clearly been the best female tennis player on the planet for the past six months, could finally reclaim the number one ranking if she wins the Australian Open later this month.

Serena got her 2013 season off to a great start earlier today by capturing her 47th career title with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the Brisbane International final.

Serena, currently ranked third, has won 35 of her past 36 matches, including titles at Wimbledon, the Olympics, the U.S. Open, the season-ending WTA championships and now the first event of 2013.

She is a strong favorite to win the Australian Open for a sixth time. If she does, the 31-year-old will become the oldest woman to ever hold the top spot on the WTA tour. Chris Evert set the mark in November 1985, aged 30 years, 11 months and three days.

Serena would also win her 16th grand slam titles which would put her two behind Evert and Martina Navratilova (18) and six behind Steffi Graf (22). The all-time grand slam leader is Margaret Court (24). But 11 of Court’s victories came at the Australian Open before it was on par with the other three slams.

2 Remarks

  1. Here’s hoping Vika and Sharapova can get it together for the Aussie open.

  2. And I hope she stays fit and focused and can do it, she’s proving age isn’t nothing but a number in the WTA!
