See Neil Patrick Harris’ opening number!

Neil Patrick Harris had hinted in interviews that he wouldn’t open the Oscars with a musical number.

He lied.

The first-time Oscar host seemed to be opening with a traditional monologue when he took a shot at the lack of diversity in this year’s nominees when he said they were here ‘to honor Hollywood’s best a whitest – I’m sorry! Best and brightest!’

He then quickly segued into a musical number filled with very current movie and pop culture references including the lyric ‘I secretly hope someone pulls a Kanye West.’

(Harris was referring to West storming the Grammy stage earlier this month as Beck was about to begin his speech for winning Best Album.)

Joined by Anna Kendrick in Into the Woods Cinderella mode and Jack Black in loudmouth mode, the number included dancing, some magic, stupendous visual effects and movie clips from films ranging from The Wizard of Oz to Star Wars to Risky Business.

It also had film clips including Sharon Stone on Basic Instinct which Harris described as ‘When Sharon went commando and unsettled us all’ and of a young Ben Affleck and Matt Damon and Harris singing about the ‘tension’ between the two.

Kendrick had one of the best lines when she sang to Harris about happy endings ‘except in Gone Girl when that lady slit your throat!’

Harris screamed: ‘Spoiler alert!’
