See Liberace’s final public appearances (Oprah, GMA) and latest trailer for “Behind the Candelabra”
HBO’s Behind the Candelabra does not premiere until May 26 but the promotional hype began last month with an Entertainment Weekly cover featuring stars Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.
A second teaser premiered over the weekend which I share with you here but I found something even more interesting on Youtube: Liberace’s last television appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Good Morning America in 1986.
He died on February 4, 1987 from complications from AIDS. The Oprah appearance was taped in late 1986 and is believed to be his final appearance. He looks thin but appears in good spirits.
Ironically, he’s promoting a movie called The Wonderful Private World of Liberace which is supposed to be showing people the real him. It, of course, does not address him being gay.
The GMA interview was done by Ron Reagan, son of then president Ronald Reagan who would not publicly mention AIDS until the year after Liberace’s death.
