It premieres tonight in the 10 p.m. spot on CBS long-occupied by CSI: Miami which has moved to Sundays.

Scott Caan plays Det. Danny Williams opposite Alex O’Loughlin who is Set. Steve McGarrett. Lost alum Daniel Dae Kim is Det. Chin Ho Kelly and Grace Park plays Kona Kalakua.

When a group of us chatted with Scott at the TV Critics Association Summer Press Tour, I asked him if he got any tips from his father, James Caan, who had made the transition from films to television in NBC’s Las Vegas.

“I’ve never seen an episode of Las Vegas,” Scott admitted. “I just never have. I watch movies. When I was a kid I did [watch TV]. I know that there’s great television out ther., I keep myself pretty busy so I don’t have a ton of time watch TV. There’s a lot of things I want to do and accomplish. There’s not enough hours in the day to watch TV.”

Well, let’s hope viewers won’t be too busy to watch his show. I don’t think they will.

Scott, whose movies credits include Ocean’s Eleven and its two sequels as well as Into the Blue and Friends With Money, wasn’t easily convinced to do the series even though he had dabbled in television with a recurring role on Entourage.

“At first I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do it. Not because I don’t like television, there’s some things I want to do like make my own movies,” he explained. “When you’re on a television show you don;t have a ton of time to do other things.”

“But it’s been great so far and I feel like I’ve been able to do better work on the television show than I have in movies,” he added. “I fought to be in movies for so long, kicking and screaming to not do television. In television, you have a bigger opportunity to do what you’re good at, there’s more parts. They’re making so many less movies and so much more television. It’s opening up doors for actors who never did TV. They’re watching cable and network TV and saying, ‘What a minute, this is good!”http://blog.newsok.com/television/files/2010/05/Alex-OLoughlin-Scott-Caan-Hawaii-Five-O.jpg

2 Remarks

  1. I grew up watching this show in the 70′s, so I wasn’t sure I’d like this re-make. I was surprised and found it a lot of fun. I’m not a fan of cop shows in general, but this one had a lighter feel to it. Plays more like an action show than a crime detective story. I really enjoyed the cast all around and hope they utilize Grace Park more in future episodes. It sure beats having just another reality show.

  2. I got the opportunity to work with the production of the show here on Oahu. It was a Flash forward for me. When Hawaii Five O aired in 1969 I was 14 years old, hanging out with Surfers on the Gulf Coast and Mexico Rio Grand Valley, The original show had me spooked about moving to Hawaii as I had wanted to in the 70′s, because the view wasn’t so nice. The run down apartment buildings and the drug alerts. I did not see a nice community that I would be living in. So, I put off the idea of moving to Hawaii. Now I stay here and love it. You have to find your spot here and then plant. The North Shore of Oahu has a lot to offer those that come here, it is real Hawaii, and speaking of real Hawaii, the dialogue, is so Ohana ~ which means ”family’ for Hawaiian’s. Danno speaks Ohana and the other characters work within that meaning. McGarrett is witnessing this which i think is a great audience attraction ~ lets watch Jack MCG GROW. I will just be watching DANNO ~ HE CAN PUT ME IN HIS BOOK ` book me DANNO.
