Sam Smith reflects on how being on “SNL” ignited his career in the US: “You could feel the shift”

Sam Smith, the openly gay singer from Britain, calls his guest spot on Saturday Night Live ‘one of the scariest nights of my life.’

It also ignited his career in the US.

‘I tried to beg my managers and my team to not do SNL because I thought it was way too early. But I was so, so wrong,’ Smith writes in the current issue of Entertainment Weekly.

‘It was incredible and it’s broken me in America. That night, people were recognizing me a bit more. It was hours after, actually. You could feel the shift and you could feel the change physically in that moment in New York and it was amazing. It was really surreal.’

Since that appearance, his star has only continued to rise and last week he got six Grammy nominations including Album of the Year for In the Lonely Hour), Record of the Year and Song of the Year for Stay With Me and Best New Artist.

‘I don’t feel pressure to follow up In the Lonely Hour,’ he writes. ‘It’s hard to explain. I want to be a career artist. I actually like the idea of my career going in a wave. All I’m going to do is document my life and write about who I fall in love with, who I fall out of love with. I hope that’s enough.

‘I’m not going to beat myself up about it. As long as I’m proud of my work, then I don’t care.’
