RuPaul not offended by use of word “tranny”

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RvwUpO0YO0c/TU8fITWcnOI/AAAAAAAABpc/tFqmKVQoIC0/s1600/RuPaul.jpgThere have been several controversies that have surfaced in recent months regarding transgender humor.

But RuPaul tells Huffington Post that everyone is overreacting.

On ABC’s sitcom Work It (canceled on Saturday), which was protested by GLAAD and others due to its portrayal of two men masquerading as women to get jobs, RuPaul said: “Don’t take life so seriously… We live in a culture where everyone is offended by everything.”

On Lance Bass apologizing after using the word “tranny” while hosting Access Hollywood Live: “It’s ridiculous! It’s ridiculous!… I love the word “tranny”…And I hate the fact that he’s apologized. I wish he would have said, ‘F-you, you tranny jerk!’”

Well, okay then.

3 Remarks

  1. He is right. When someone calls you a name that he/she thinks will hurt you, the best way to take away that power is to embrace that very word like it means nothing or very little, or like it just a pathetic and boring attempt to harm you. Get offended, overreact, etc. and you have empowered the bigot and make him taste victory. Once you mastered it, the bigot is at lost of “powerful hurting words” to use, and intelligence is never an option for them. That’s why I see the whole tranny controversy as counterproductive an ill oriented. You have to emphasize in the real intentions of the speaker.

  2. What I find to be the real shame is that the uproar about the word has lately been aimed not at people using the word to hurt, but other members of the LGBT community that clearly have no ill will (Lance Bass, Neil Patrick Harris). During Justin Vivian Bond’s holiday show this winter, Justin had this to say, “so the thing with trannys…oh, and I know we’re not supposed to be using that word, but I’ve called myself a tranny, and have always said, ‘It doesn’t matter what word you use, I can look past a word and see an asshole or not.’”

    I think that’s a great point.

  3. RuPaul is not trans*. He has no right to say it. It’s simple as that.
