“Role/Play” starring real-life couple Matthew Montgomery and Steve Callahan is out on DVD! before they became a couple in real life, Steve Callahan and Matthew Montgomery had established themselves as stars in gay independent films.

Steve was in the memorable and acclaimed East Side Story and Nine Lives while Matthew starred in such hits as Back Soon, Long-Term Relationship, Gone But Not Forgotten and Pornography: A Thriller.

You wondered if the chemistry they have in real life would translate onto the screen when writer-director Rob Williams paired them to star in Role/Play.

The film, out on DVD today, was popular on the festival circuit last year including Outfest in Los Angeles.

It’s about a recently outed soap opera actor (Callahan) who crosses paths with a recently divorced gay marriage activist (Montgomery) while both are hiding out at a Palm Springs resort. Their chance meeting and attraction to each other forces them to confront the price of fame and the fickle nature of celebrity within the gay community.

There are some critics who felt the movie was too talky and I must say, there is a lot of dialogue. But it’s an ambitious film that attempts to say something about gay celebrity and gay media. I felt that the actors really sold it and it also helped that several of their conversations took place in bed! as much as I enjoyed seeing these very fit guys in the buff, I enjoyed their conversations even more like this fun exchange:

Callahan: “You have no sense of gay culture. Have you seen Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?”

Matthew:   “It’s a TV movie about a little girl who fell down a well.”

In addition to the performances (David Pevsner plays the resort owner and Jim J. Bullock is fun as Callahan’s publicist), this is an intelligent script that also nails the worlds of daytime soaps and of gay activism.

DVD extras: Behind-the-Scenes Featurette: “Getting Into Character: The Making of Role/Play,” Outtakes and Bloopers, Commentary from director Rob Williams and two trailers for Role/Play and trailers for the Guest House Films DVDs Make The Yuletide Gay and Back Soon .

Just saw the film last night. Thought it was very good and out of the ordinary (as in not a sex romp but about serious issues). I think both you and Steve Callahan are outstanding dramatic actors and I hope you both get to stretch your range as far as you can take them.

But, Matthew, even as I congratulate you on your relationship with Steve Callahan, I have to admit that you just broke my heart.
