President Obama’s “It Gets Better” message

http://img2.timeinc.net/ew/dynamic/imgs/081120/barack-obama_l.jpgIt is tempting to make this post all about how disappointing it is that President Barack Obama has not done away with Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell or supported same-sex marriage.

The truth is, these discriminatory things makes gay people – young and old – feel like they are less equal.

But I want to share the president’s anti-bullying It Gets Better message anyway because it’s a good one.

He said the recent suicides of bullied gay teens “breaks my heart. It’s something that just shouldn’t happen in this country.”

“I don’t know what it’s like to grow up being picked on for being gay, but I do know what it’s like to grow up feeling that sometimes you don’t belong.”

“With time you’re going to see that your differences are a source of pride and a source of strength. … As a nation we’re founded on the belief that all of us are equal and each of us deserves the freedom to pursue our own version of happiness, to make the most of our talents, to speak out minds, to not fit in; most of all, to be true to ourselves.”

  1. I know it’s disappointing and often it seems like one big cop-out on Obama’s part but I do believe he’s caught between a rock and a hard place. I have no doubt that he believes DADT & DOMA should be repealed but this has to be done in a away that can’t be reversed. Right now anything he does is considered tyranny by the radical right and just adds more fuel to the fire if he were to issue an executive order. It’s great that courts are ruling favorably on this but again the right gets on the “courts shouldn’t be legislating from the bench” tirade. This must be done through Congress for it to be permanent and the GOP is stalling every which way it can. It’s going to happen and I know we get tired of being told to be patient but we must be.

  2. Greg, check out Dan Savage’s response to President Obama’s “It Gets Better” video. I thought he had a great response.

  3. Well said Tony
