Postcards from Fresno: Meet in the Middle 4 Equality
For the life of me, I don’t know why the heck I didn’t just hop in the car early this morning and drive to Fresno. Poor planning on my part but I’ll do my best to cobble together some of the coverage that is coming from today’s Meet in the Middle 4 Equality rally.
The line-up of speakers sounded stellar and included today’s Morning Man Dustin Lance Black, the amazing Cleve Jones, the inspiring Lt. Dan Choi, Eric Lee of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, actor Eric McCormack of Will & Grace fame, and former Grey’s Anatomy cast member T.R,. Knight. Oscar winner Charlize Theron who helped publicize the event was present at the rally but reportedly did not speak.
The Fresno Bee reports that organizers pegged the cumulative turnout at 4,000 to 5,000. Fresno police estimated that the crowd peaked at 2,500 to 3,000 people. But I’m not real confident in the Bee’s story since, in its quote from McCormack, states: “Gays aren’t going to ruin marriage,” said McCormack, who’s married to a man. “They’re gay. So they’ll probably spruce it up a bit, and make it better.”
Last I checked, Eric McCormack was married to a woman. He only played gay on TV. I’m sure reporter Brad Branan will be doing a correction soon.
According to the UnitetheFight.org, where you can find video and photos from today’s event, the activities started off at 7:50am with hundreds showing for the Equality March. The march kicked off 14 miles from Fresno in Selma, CA – a nod towards the historical civil rights march in Selma, Alabama in the 60s.
