James Dean was born 95 years ago today.
He starred in just three films in the 1950s – Giant, East of Eden and Rebel Without a Cause – but what a lasting impact he made.
Dean, who was raised in Indiana by an aunt and uncle after the death of his mother, attended UCLA and beat out 350 other hopefuls to land the role of Malcolm in Macbeth. He dropped out soon after to pursue acting full-time. He became one of the youngest members of the famed Actors Studio in New York City and was soon landing parts in several television shows which led to calls from Hollywood.
Several people who knew Dean, including his close friend and first biographer William Bast, have stated that he was gay. Bast lived with him both in Los Angeles and New York and has written of their years of sexual involvement. Rebel director Nicolas Ray and Giant co-star Elizabeth Taylor have also talked about his sexuality.
But this beautiful young actor did not live long enough for us to know how this might have affected his life and career. He was killed in 1955 in a car crash in California.
Dean was just two 24 years old. He received Academy Award nominations for both East of Eden and Giant – the only actor to earn two posthumous nominations.

I’ve been so obsessed with Carlos Alcaraz journey to winning his first Australian Open that I overlooked a very important pro tennis story: British wheelchair tennis star Greg Slade took to Instagram before the start of the tournament to share with the public that he is gay.
I think it is wonderful and hooray for Greg, the 2024 Summer Paralympics silver medalist.
I’ve started following him on Instagram and plan to start following his career. He made it to the semifinals at Wimbledon last year in singles and made it to the final of the doubles competition.
Greg, who is 23, is currently ranked 18th in the world in singles and has won five singles titles. He has 14 career titles in doubles and is currently ranked 14th as a doubles player.
Below are his posts on coming out and his working with Pride In Tennis.

Stage and screen legend Ian McKellen sat down for an extended conversation with Stephen Colbert about his long career as a performer, reprising his roles as Gandalf and Magneto in upcoming films, the unique joys of live theater, and the Shakespeare role he originated in the 1960s which resonates just as loudly today.
I love these Aussie chat shows! One of the stars of Heated Rivalry, Robbie G.K., has chatted with Today Extra about the show becoming a television phenomenon.
When I was in New York City last August, I only had time for one Broadway show amid all of the US Open matches I bought tickets for. So I didn’t get to see Jonathan Groff in the musical Just In Time. So how great that he performed Beyond the Sea from the Tony-nominated Broadway musical this week on The Kelly Clarkson Show.
Enjoy!
Luke Evans and Fran Tomas sat down with Jon Dean at their home in Cardiff, in an intimate conversation around relationships, exes and being a gay couple in the public eye. For the first time Luke and Fran share not only how they built their clothing and lifestyle brand BDXY, but also the building of their relationship and unique life together.

All of headlines about Cher’s appearance at the Grammys last night are focusing on her flub when announcing the winner of the Record of the Year prize. It’s a bit of a pity because it ended up overshadowing what is a well-deserved and long-overdue prize. Cher had her first number one song more than 60 years ago as part of Sonny and Cher (I Got You Babe in 1964) then had her first solo hit a year later with 1965’s All I Really Want to Do. Many hits followed – many hits. Many, many hits from Bang Bang, The Beat Goes On, and You Better Sit Down Kids in the 1960s to Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves, Dark Lady, Half Breed, and Take Me Home in the 1970s to I Found Someone, We All Sleep Alone, If I Could Turn Back Time, and Just Like Jessie James in the 1980s. Hits in the 1990s included Believe, Heart of Stone, Love and Understanding and Strong Enough and since 2000, her hits have included Song For the Lonely, Woman’s World, You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me, and DJ Play the Christmas Song, among others.
For all this success, Cher had only won a single Grammy and that was for dance recording for Believe. Another recent Grammy Lifetime Achievement honoree, Diana Ross, had never won a single award as a member of the Supremes or as a solo act.
It’s a deeply flawed awards show but to finally give Cher some Grammy love for her amazing career was nice and should have been the headline!

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is in theaters May 1 and well, I. Can’t. Wait. I’ve seen the first movie so many times I could-re-enact complete scenes. But, I think a few more viewings before seeing the sequel might be in order.
The first full-length trailer for the sequel has just been premiered and Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci are all returning for the film which sees Hathaway’s Andy Sachs reunite with Streep’s ruthless fashion editor, Miranda Priestly, for what appears to be a major clash of the fashion titans.
New cast members who boarded the upcoming sequel include Kenneth Branagh, Simone Ashley, Justin Theroux, Lucy Liu, Caleb Hearon, Helen J. Shen, Pauline Chalamet, B.J. Novak, and Conrad Ricamora.
