Out rugby star Gareth Thomas talks about Mickey Rourke’s preparation to play him in film
Micky Rourke seems a little long in the tooth to play the much-younger Gareth Thomas in a film but hey, I’ll buy a ticket.
Gareth, the openly gay Welsh rugby star who recently retired, tells UK’s The Mirror that he recently spent time in LA with Rourke who was nominated for an Oscar for The Wrestler.
“If he cares about something, he will do whatever it takes to master something,” Thomas said.
While professional rugby is the backdrop, the heart of the story is Gareth’s coming out process.
“The battle I had with myself and coming out the other end and that’s what [Rourke] sees the story as.”

I would like very much to see on the screen Gareth Thomas’ journey but will have to hear reasons choosing Micky Rourke.

Mickey Rourke? Really? They couldn’t find another actor to play him.

I wonder if the Gareth Thomas might be the best pick for playing Gareth Thomas on screen? Stranger things have happened?
