Olympic Morning Man Classic: Mark Spitz!

Before there was Michael Phelps, there was a guy named Mark Spitz.

It was 44 years ago that the Indiana University graduate went to the 1972 Munich Olympics and won not only seven golds, but set seven world records in the process.

“Sometimes it feels like it was 40 years, sometimes it feels like it was yesterday and sometimes it feels like somewhere in between,” Spitz told USA Today in 2012. “I’m asked about it every four years, and now I’m asked a little more often because it’s been 40 years. It’s not like, if they don’t ask me, I’m disappointed, and if they do, I’m irritated. It’s a part of my life I’m proud of.”

By the time he got to Munich, Spitz had already won two golds, a silver and a bronze at the Mexico City Olympics. He retired from competition after the 1972 Olympics and became something of an endorsement king with commercials and magazine covers, dabbled in acting and worked as a sports broadcaster for several years.

He then went into real estate.

Spitz, now 65, is one of only five Olympians to have won nine or more gold medals in his career. Phelps holds the record with 18.
