Neil Patrick Harris wins two Emmys! A look back at “Glee” episode and Tony Awards that won him gold!

NPH at last night's Creative Arts Emmy Awards.

Betty White, Neil Patrick Harris Claim Early Emmys | Neil Patrick HarrisHearty congratulations to Neil Patrick Harris who won Emmys last night for his guest spot on Glee and for hosting last year’s Tony Awards.

The star of the CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother could win a third Emmy next Sunday is he prevails in the outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series category. He has lost the last three years but appears to have the momentum.

He received the Emmys at Saturday night’s Creative Arts Emmys ceremony at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles where guest acting Emmys were handed out in four categories as well as scores of other awards.

When accepting his guest actor prize Saturday, Neil thanked his partner, David Burtka with whom he is expecting twins in October.

Flashback scenes will show his character of Bryan (in a very unfortunate mullet)  picking up girls and getting all the cool solos while Will sits off in the sidelines. The stage for a present-day rematch is set when Harris’ character announces his intent to cut the arts programs at the school.

Why so bitter? Show choir ruined his life, made him feel he could be a star, but all he could do is book Carnival cruises. He wanted vengeance and Neil’s performance was delicious and also gave him the opportunity to belt out a few power ballads.

Neil won the award over a stellar field which also included Mike O’Malley who was nominated for his moving performance as Burt Hummel, father of gay high school student Kurt Hummel, on Glee. He praised O’Malley during his speech.

As for the Tony Awards, Neil was a low-key and charming host who did not make the show all about himself.

Then, after all the awards had been handed out, he simply stole the show by launching into a completely wonderful musical number about the Tony show that had just finished! The lyrics were filled with references to the winners.

Some sample lyrics:

Elton’s Billy was all the rage
What class, what drive,
now Angela won five
and she hooked up with Poison backstage.

and

This show could not be gayer
if Liza was named mayor
and Elton John took flight.

Here is Neil backstage last night talking about how the LA Times awards site The Envelope had pointed out to Emmy officials that Neil’s name was originally not included in the official Tony telecast nomination. Onstage he had said: For his Tony win, Harris said, “I want to thank Boomer from The Envelope who told me I was even eligible for this award!”

Enjoy some of Neil Patrick Harris’s Emmy-winning work!
