NBC trumpets having gay actor Michael B. Washington in the cast of new comedy series “American Auto”

My favorite press release of the week came earlier today and it was sent by NBC-Universal with this headline: “LBGTQ Actor Michael B. Washington Starring in New NBC Comedy.”

I know that an increasing number of performers are out and proud these days but for a mainstream network to be touting that in a press release is out of this world cool and amazing.

The release further states: “American Auto” stars out gay actor Michael B. Washington (“Boys in the Band”) along with ensemble of Ana Gasteyer, Jon Barinholtz, Harriet Dyer, Humphrey Ker, Tye White and X Mayo. “American Auto” – from “Superstore” executive producer Justin Spitzer – will air its first two episodes in a special preview on Monday, Dec. 13 at 10 p.m. following a live two-hour telecast of “The Voice.”

A synopsis: From the creator of “Superstore” comes a new workplace comedy that takes the wheels off the automobile industry. Set in Detroit, the corporate executives of Payne Motors are at a crossroads: adapt to the changing times or be sent to the junkyard. Shaking things up is the new CEO, whose leadership, experience and savvy is only slightly offset by her complete lack of knowledge about cars. Luckily, her team has some of the best minds in the business – when they aren’t fighting or trying to outwit each other. From the corporate office to the factory floor, the crew of Payne Motors is driving home the laughs.
