My night seeing “The Cake” at Geffen Playhouse

After seeing a play at Geffen Playhouse last Friday with my friend Brantley Bardin, I vow to make it to Westwood more often.

We saw the terrific play called The Cake which was inspired by a story still in the headlines.

This is a marvelously funny new play by Bekah Brunstetter (This is Us, Switched at Birth), directed by Jennifer Chamber. The cast is Morrison Keddie, Shannon Lucio, Rod McLachlan, Carolyn Ratteray and Debra Jo Rupp.

Brantley posted a mini review on Facebook after our evening out and I have his permission to share it with you here:

Yo, L.A., this terrific play with a remarkably casual tour de force performance by Debra Jo Rupp (‘remarkably casual’ tour de force because though she’s in virtually every scene, her performance is not about scenery chewing, but about real, if theatrically heightened, human truth). The play surpasses all expectations.you go in to the theatre fearing – I.e., that, yes, it’s about a southern woman/bakery owner who refuses to make a wedding cake for her best friend’s lesbian daughter, but turns out to actually be about how people are all specifically complicated and have their own very individual backstories, tragedies, upbringings, beliefs and reasons for why – ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ – they do what they do. “The Cake” is funny, troubling and moving – and, again, funny! Totally fabulous. Go.

Nice touches were the audiences being treated to pieces of red velvet cake after the show then Brantley and I ran into Debra Jo Rupp in the lobby after as she was carrying a heavy vase with flowers.
