My chat with “Glee” leading man Matthew Morrison
The first thing you need to know is that the photo of sexy Matthew Morrison (left) has absolutely nothing to do with the “director’s cut” of the pilot episode of Glee that is airing tonight on FOX.
But it got your attention, right?
The photo was posted earlier today on the Boy Culture site and is from last year’s Broadway Bares charity event.
While the much-buzzed-about Glee seems destined to bring him his biggest exposure yet, Matthew is already a well-established Tony Award nominated Broadway star. He wrapped up a run in South Pacific before taking on Glee and also was a star of The Light in the Piazza, Hairspray, The Rocky Horror Show and the play A Naked Girl on the Appian Way.
But for now, it’s all about Glee for this 30-year-old talent whose film roles include Dan In Real Life and Music and Lyrics. He’s also guested on several prime-time shows and had a co-starring role in the TV version of the musical Once Upon a Mattress starring Carol Burnett and Tracey Ullman.
I recently chatted with Matt about the show and his character of Will Schuester, a high school Spanish teacher who takes on the role of restoring the school’s glee club to its former glory.
The show’s pilot originally aired last spring after American Idol then FOX decided to not air any more episodes of the critically-praised show already with a growing fan base until this fall.
“I’m excited for the show to be out there and for everyone to see it because we’re all so proud of it,” he said. “I was a little worried with just airing one episode and it being done. I think people were upset at first that they had to wait but I think it was the best thing because it’s created this real grassroots movement and the word-of-mouth is just out there. I feel like the show just backs up the buzz and I feel like every episode just gets better and better.”
Initially, it seems like Will is kind of one of those perfect handsome guys with good intentions and the pretty wife at home.
“I like him,” Matthew says. “Honestly, if I wasn’t doing what I’m doing, I would probably be teaching. I’m modeling him after the positive teachers that I’ve had in my life.”
We soon learn that Will’s life is not perfect and that he’s got his flaws.
“I love it that he’s a regular guy and that he has moments where he fails and things just don’t go right,” the actor said. “He has to kind of dig himself out of a hole but he always tries to keep a positive attitude.”
New episodes of Glee will begin airing on Wednesday nights on FOX on Sept. 9. Fox will broadcast a director’s cut of the first episode, tonight then on Friday, the network will again air the first episode complete with real-time Twitter messages from cast members at the bottom of the screen (a move dubbed a “tweet-peat”).
