Morning Man Classic: Gordon Scott!

photoThis very handsome man was best known for playing Tarzan in five films between 1955-60. At 6 feet 3 inches tall and with movie matinee looks, Gordon Scott certainly fit the bill to play the jungle stud. Scott had finished serving three years in the U.S. Army and working as a lifeguard at a hotel on the Las Vegas Strip when he was discovered by a Hollywood talent agent and quickly chosen to replace Lex Barker as Tarzan. But after five years in the role, he feared me be typecast so he moved to Italy and became a popular star of what were known as Sword-and-sandal epics that featured handsome bodybuilders as various characters from Greek and Roman myth. His final role was the 1968 film The Tramplers. He died in 2007 at the age of 80. In the final decades of his life, Scott was a popular guest at film conventions and autograph shows.

5 Remarks

  1. Next to last photo is of Mike Henry, the gorgeous and hairy chested actor that ALSO played Tarzan but is better known as Hot Lips Houlihan’s husband, Donald Penopscott, and Jackie Gleason’s very dimwitted son in “Smokey and the Bandit”.

  2. Thanks Stuart! I took him out, maybe I’ll do him another week!

  3. No mention of his personal life?

  4. dear sir i think the pictures and the story you done on gordon scott was really nice. i just wish he hadn’t quit acting so suddenly like he did he was an very good actor as well. i have bought an lot of his movies when possible at an fair price. but any way the story was nice. sincerely jenney

  5. Gordon Scott was also my favorite Tarzan. It’s a shame they shaved his chest, but that was the norm in those days. If you can get a copy of Hercules and the Princess of Troy, Buffalo Bill, or his eurospy pics you can see that hairy chested he was even more!
