Monday Morning Man: Laslo Djere!

Have Oscars on the brain but this tennis pro is suddenly on my radar after winning the Rio Open in Brazil on Sunday.

He’s Serbian star Laslo Djere who is 23 years old and has just reached his highest career ranking of 37th in the world.

It was his first pro title and he really captured the crowd’s heart with his acceptance speech dedicating the breakthrough triumph to his dead parents..

Djere’s mom died seven ago from cancer and his dad died just a couple of months ago after also suffering from the disease. Before the final, he said he was playing to honor their memory: “I’m sitting here, at 23, having lost both my parents. I just want to make them proud.”

Following his his straight sets win over Felix Auger-Aliassime he said while standing on the stage at the post-match ceremony.: “I want to dedicate this trophy to my parents. I lost my mum seven years ago so I want to dedicate this one to her.”

Djere had to wait to get another word out because the crowd wouldn’t let him keep talking, roaring their approval and clapping loudly. Twenty-five seconds later the applause died down enough for him to continue.

“And also to my dad, I lost him two months ago so my parents have had the biggest impact on me and because of them I am who I am today,” he said. “I really want to dedicate this to them and I hope they are watching me now.”
