“Modern Family” creator Steve Levitan speaks out about no kisses for Cameron and Mitchell’s just be clear here: I’m all for same-sex kissing, especially when I’m one of the participants.

But I’ve not written anything about the Facebook campaign to have Mitchell (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet) lock lips on ABC’s Modern Family. They are so funny and cute and the writing so good that I had not even thought about it plus sitcoms aren’t really known for their kissing.

Did George and Weezie Jefferson smooch much? Ralph and Alice Kramden?

Anyway, Crushable has remarks made by Modern Family creator Steve Levitan at Monday’s Peabody Awards for excellence in television at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel.

“We don’t quite get that controversy,” he said. “We think the vast majority of the gay community finds the Cameron and Mitchell depiction to be very positive. Here we are the first show on television to show a committed gay couple adopting a baby, raising a baby. It seems to me that there are better targets out there than us. That said, everything we’re doing is based on character and that very issue will be addressed next season. But it was our plan all along to do so.”

  1. The lack of kissing was no big deal until the airport episode, the juxtaposition of Cam and Mitch’s hug vs Claire and Phil’s kiss leaped off the screen. I’d barely even thought about the kissing issue before this. The show is great, they can do what they want, and I believe it when they say they were already planning to tackle the issue as character development in the future, but I’m skeptical that the omission of any kissing to date has NOTHING to do with the characters being gay.

    Tom Nunnery says:

If it is no big deal, why did Claire and Phil kiss in a very normal situation and Cam and Mitch did not kiss?

  3. I agree – I never noticed it until the airport scene, it was very apparent there.
They are on ABC, which clearly allows same sex kisses (Brother & Sisters, OLTL) – so why not let Cam & Mitchell smooch like Claire and Phil in that scene, instead of do the oh-so-1980′s two men just hug?
