“Milk” crosses $30 million at box office
Focus Features took advantage of the success “Milk” had at the Oscars last month by expanding the biopic to 828 theaters on Friday, nearly double its number of locations the week before. It placed in the top 20 by taking in $1.5 million, according to final figures released Monday. That represented a 40 percent spike in business and brought the movie;’s domestic total to $30 million. That’s small potatoes when compared to the $100 million-plus grosses of “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” but “Milk” had a production budget of just $20 million so should make a tidy profit for thew studio when all is said and done.
“Milk” also accomplished something at the Oscars that a movie like “Mall Cop” never will: it brought Oscars to Sean Penn (best actor) and Dustin Lance Black (best original screenplay).
