Michael Sam not deterred by anti-gay online haters
Since coming out as a gay man over a year ago, Michael Sam has heard from a lot of the haters.
Some of them even wish him dead.
Sam talks about the online abuse that has been hurled at him in a new video spot released by Coca Cola in advance of the Super Bowl on Sunday.
The University of Missouri stand-out and the first openly gay man drafted by an NFL team, shares in the spot the details of one online hater he felt compelled to respond to.
‘She pretty much told me that we don’t belong – that we’re evil. She is really the only hate message that I replied to. And what I said was, “I am sorry that you feel that way, but even though you hate me so much I still love you, and I wish you have a great day.”‘
The woman, of course, did not respond.
Sam shares the story for Coca Cola’s #MakeItHappy campaign.
‘All the negativity that comes to me I channel to positivity,’ he says. ‘I have to prove the haters wrong. If I can use social media to make somebody understand and accept people I will do so. I’m not doing it for me. I’m doing it for them.’
