Michael Sam is cut by St. Louis Rams – is thankful for the “tremendous opportunity”
We will never know what would have happened to Michael Sam had he decided to remain in the closet before embarking on an NFL career.
He was a late pick by the St. Louis Rams in the NFL draft then played the pre-season under much scrutiny and, by all accounts, performed solidly.
But it was not enough.
Earlier today, Sam was cut by the team and we will know by tomorrow if another team will pick him up. If not, he can be a part of the Rams practice squad.
Frustrating.
Tweeted Sam: “The most worthwhile things in life rarely come easy, this is a lesson I’ve always known. The journey continues.”
He also tweeted: ‘I want to thank the entire Rams organization and the city of St. Louis for giving me this tremendous opportunity and allowing me to show I can play at this level. I look forward to continuing to build on the progress I made here toward a long and successful career.’
The move came as teams across the league reduced their squads to 53 players.
Rams coach Jeff Fisher said at a news conference: “I will tell you this: I was pulling for Mike, I really was. And I don’t say that very often. Mike came in here and did everything we asked him to do.
“It was a football decision, and the decision is no different than any other decision that we make. It was a football decision. It was a football decision back in May to draft Mike. … He’s not about drawing attention to himself. He kept his head down and worked and you can’t ask anything more out of any player for that matter.”

I really hope Sam will find another team quickly. I am not a football fan, but I feel like an out gay athlete is important for young men , straight and gay, to see!
