Michael Sam believes his NFL career ‘probably would have been better for me’ if he stayed closeted

With his pro career over for now, Michael Sam is speaking out about why he came out publicly before the NFL draft and how he thinks things would have gone differently had he waited.

“I wanted to come out after I made an NFL roster, it really wasn’t supposed to be public,” Sam said on the Dan Patrick Show. “It was just supposed to be to the team, as I did at the University of Missouri.”

But with some reporters were aware of his sexuality, Sam says “I wanted to be the one to tell my own story. I didn’t want someone telling it for me.”

Amid enormous publicity, Sam was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in 2014 but cut before the start of the regular season. He was later cut from the Dallas Cowboys practice squad then quit the Canadian Football League after just one game.

Any regrets now over coming out?

“I’m not going to say … but it probably would have been better for me if I didn’t come out, I would be on a roster,” Sam said. “But, as I said, I have no regrets whatsoever.”
