Meryl Streep named an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters

http://www.michellemarcos.com/images/meryl_streep.jpgThe movie academy may have passed Meryl Streep over for an Oscar this year but another academy is giving the film legend her proper due.

The star of Sophie’s Choice, Doubt, Julie & Julia, The Devil Wears Prada and a slew of other memorable films has been named an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Poet and Academy President J.D. McClatchy described Streep as being at the peak of her career and called her acting an “extraordinary example of insight, depth and virtuosity.”

The 112-year-old academy is an elite club that includes Toni Morrison, Stephen Sondheim and Martin Scorsese. Miss Streep is the first member to be chosen solely for acting.

“I have to say that I was stunned, and when they sent me the roster of people in the academy I just burst into tears,” Streep said. “I couldn’t believe that I’d be even allowed in the kitchen.
