Meryl Monday: Ed Begley Jr. leaves screen wife Roseanne for Miss Streep’s character in “She-Devil”
We all know by now that Meryl Streep is one of the best comedy actresses in the business.
She has been absolutely hilarious in such films as It’s Complicated, Death Becomes Her, Prime, The Devil Wears Prada and Postcards From the Edge.
But it was not until the 1989 film She-Devil that we knew of Miss Streep’s comedic gifts because she had spent most of the decade perfecting accents for such dramatic films as Sophie’s Choice, A Cry in the Dark, Out of Africa and Ironweed.
As a trashy romance novelist Mary Fisher is She-Devil, Meryl is a riot and incurs the wrath of Roseanne when she steals away her husband, played by Ed Begley Jr.
When Ed and I chatted at last month’s GLAAD at 25 event about LGBT equality, I asked him what it was like to work with Miss Streep on that film.
“She is a goddess as we all know,” he said. “She is the funniest, brightest, most talented actress in my lifetime and she’s a great person too. I was proud to be in that film with her.”
Here are some scenes featuring Ed and Meryl:
