Meredith Baxter is adjusting to life in Y&R’s Genoa City where, she jokes, “everyone is so inbred”
Meredith Baxter thought she had a lot of lines to learn during her seven seasons playing Elyse Keaton on the classic NBC sitcom Family Ties.
That was easy street!
Now that she has begun a role on the CBS daytime soap The Young and the Restless, she has to learn a lot more lines in a much shorter time.
‘Being on a soap demands unbelievable discipline, which I didn’t always have,’ she tells TV Guide magazine.
‘Back on Family Ties, (co-star) Michael Gross would know his lines letter perfect, while I’d write mine on a piece of paper and stick it in his jacket pocket so I could get at them quickly. No way you can do that on Y&R.’
The plots on Family Ties were simple compared to what is going on in Genoa City, the fictional town where The Young and the Restless is set.
‘Everyone in Genoa City is so inbred,’ Baxter says, laughing.
‘And their problems! “I killed my brothers and one of my children, then married my daughter off to white slavery, only it turned out she’s my mother.” I’m in a whole new world!’
Baxter, who married Nancy Locke last December, plays a chatty barfly named Maureen on the soap. The character has secret connections to the town.
