“Matt Shepard Was A Friend of Mine” out on DVD and digital today and it is so worth buying

The wonderful documentary. Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine, explores the short life and tragic death of Matthew Shepard in a way never seen before.

Starting today, you can purchase or rent the film on DVD and all digital platforms and I highly recommend that you do.

I watched it earlier this year and not only was I deeply moved, I realized that this film was introducing us to Matt in a way that we had not seen him before. Many of his friends from different periods of his life are interviewed and previous home movies and never-before-seen photos are featured. There are also excerpts from his journals chronicling difficult periods in his life and how at the time of his death, he was finally in a good place.

The film spent more than a year on the international festival circuit and took home 10 Best Documentary and Audience Choice Awards and had a theatrical run earlier this year in the US and Canada.

Matt Shepard is a Friend of Mine is Michele Josue’s film debut and the first film done by someone from Matt’s life. It’s is an intimate tribute to the young man she knew, the young man behind the story that rocked the nation and caused outcry around the world in 1998.

Judy Shepard says in a statement: “Michele was one of Matt’s most cherished friends, as are others whom she spent years interviewing, sharing how Matt changed them and how they changed themselves in the wake of his passing. Her film will forever stand as a unique view into our son’s heart and his hopes. We are profoundly grateful that others will be able to share in its message.’

I interviewed Josue as well as Matt’s dad, Dennis Shepard, earlier this year. You can read that story HERE.
