Lunch Break Videos: When Barbra Streisand and Katherine Hepburn tied for the best actress Oscar
Being such a huge Barbra Streisand fan for so many years, I’m a little astounded that I have never seen the full video of her Academy Awards acceptance speech the year she won the best actress Oscar for Funny Girl.
Ingrid Bergman presented the award at the 1969 ceremony and the fellow nominees were Katherine Hepburn, Patricia Neal, Joanne Woodward and Vanessa Redgrave (all past or future Oscar winners). Miss Bergman opened the envelope and, looking very surprised, said: “It’s a tie!”
She first announced that Hepburn was one of the winners for The Lion in Winter then followed that up by announcing that Streisand had also won for Funny Girl.
Lion director Anthony Harvey accepted for Hepburn who was not present to accept any of the four best actress Oscars she won in her career. But Streisand, in her see-through bell bottomed pantsuit more than made up for her absence! The first words from her speech are classic. She looks at her shiny new Oscar and says: “Hello gorgeous.”
It’s pretty astounding that there would be a tie which had never happened before or since. But I can’t think of a more fitting year for it to happen because when you watch either performance, you see that both stand the test of time and two of the greatest given by any actress in the history of movies.
